Adoption News Round-up

Happy Monday! We haven’t done an Adoption News Round-up in a while, so today seemed like as good a day as any. We had a very relaxing weekend and are glad to see spring peeking out from behind the clouds. Here’s a round-up of some of the interesting news that’s hit the adoption world in the past week.

Huffington Post, “International Adoption: Why Are There Are 153 Million Orphans When Countless Parents Want Kids?” What is prohibiting so many children from being adopted? The article interviews Jane Aronson, who, after adopting her son Des from Ethiopia, went on to found the Worldwide Orphan Foundation. She also wrote “Carried in our Hearts” a book featuring inspiring stories about adoption.

Did you catch this segment on Oprah, where she interviewed Jane Fonda about her adopted daughter?

Yahoo News, “French Senate takes up Gay Marriage and Adoption Debate.” We are not the only country struggling to fight for the right to marry and adopt for all. This has been a very contentious issue in France recently as well. The bill is seeking to allow these rights for same-sex couples, but there has been a great deal of protesting against the matter.

Brooklyn Daily Eagle, “Brooklynite’s New Novel Explores Complexities of Open Adoption.” I don’t know about you, but amidst all of the advice blogs, self help columns, and general rhetoric about the who, what and why of adoption, sometimes it’s just nice to read a well-written story about a couple who is a little like you. The novel depicts the struggles of open adoption as one couple moves through their adoption journey together. This interview with the author is great, and if you live in Brooklyn or the NYC area, she is giving a Q&A in Cobble Hill tomorrow evening!

Psych Central News, “Fatigue, Unmet Expectations Tied to Post-Adoption Blues.” This is a topic of increasing research, that women can have post-adoption depression just as easily as a pregnant woman can have post-partum depression. Your health and wellness is something to take very seriously, and Psych Central News breaks down some of the symptoms and reasons why adoptive mothers may experience this type of depression as well. If you are feeling depressed or unmanageably overwhelmed after the adoption of your child, please contact a counselor, your doctor or a therapist. You deserve support and should reach out to resources that can help guide you through this difficult time.
