Adoption News Round-Up

Davion Only, the sweet boy who made national headlines when he stood up in front of his church and asked for a family, has found one just in time for Christmas! The agency who represents him has been carefully handling the requests that have come in, and they’ve reported that he has moved in with a family and will be spending the holiday with them. We were so touched by his story and are so happy to see that he and his prospective adoptive family have found their own family for the holidays.

The Adoption Council of Canada has recently released a series of monographs that not only provide valuable information about raising a child with special needs, but they share important resources as well. From discovering what’s going on with your child, to advocacy efforts and addressing the issue, these are very valuable tools for anyone looking to connect to a special needs child.

After an advertisement listing the identities of two young boys seeking adoption came out in the UK, people revolted, saying that the images and identities of the boys were exploiting them, rather than helping them. This journalist for the Telegraph argues that’s not the case, and that the chance to have a family is worth the price of an advertisement. What do you think? Is advertising children for adoption worth it if it actually results in a successful adoption?

A new study analyzes the benefits and risks that the internet has on adoption. From connecting prospective parents and birth parents with agencies, to family members secretly following each other on social media, the arguments are weighted heavily on both sides. We certainly utilize the internet everyday as part of our adoption efforts, but can it ever get too much?
