Adoption News Round-up

Here’s a look at what’s been going on in the adoption world this week:

A Hawaiian couple’s adoption tragedy turns to joy as they finally welcome a new baby into their home. Yet another family who was devastated by Putin’s anti-adoption ban. Although they were unable to adopt the child they were originally hoping to bring from from Russia, we’re so happy that they were finally able to become parents again, and to give their new 9 month-old Ukrainian son a home.

It looks like Charlize Theron is going to become an adoptive mother of two! An international adoption from South Africa could be in the mix, as that is the actress’s home country, but nothing conclusive has been decided.

In Quebec, adoption records are still kept from family members looking to reunite, an issue that is a source of grave frustrating for many adoptees looking to find their birth families. This issue has been getting press in the US recently, as states like Ohio have finally granted adoptees access to their original birth certificates. “The information is there, but we can’t start with nothing,” said Ola Thune, a former cop with over 30 years’ experience who now works as a private eye. “To get anything, my impression is we have to change the law.”

A father in Utah is suing for $130 million after his son was placed for adoption without his permission. Despite contesting the adoption, which he discovered only after it had taken place, his appeals for custody were shot down. The father just missed his son’s third birthday and is actively trying to retrieve custody.

The National Council for Adoption conducted a wonderful interview with author and adoptive parent Berta Serrano, who just recently published a children’s book about adoption titled Born From The Heart. One to add to your reading lists!
