Adoption News Round-up

An open letter in the Montreal Gazette from an adoptive mother speaks to the desire to have open adoption records in Canada. This is a growing issue in Canada, and we are glad to see the basic rights of adoptees being addressed.

What do you think about Melissa Harris-Perry’s apology about leading a panel that poked fun at the Romney’s Christmas card and their adopted, black grandchild? The Huffington Post ran a wonderful op-ed in their Black Voices section about how the TV reporter should be engaging her watchers beyond just an apology and spreading awareness about the history of, and larger issues faced by, black culture.

The Huffington Post also ran a video titled “the welsteads: a don’t give up story,” about a couple who has grown their family through adoption. HuffPo says,”This Video Is The Only Thing You Need To Watch To Understand That It’s Love That Makes A Family.” After watching it ourselves, we agree.

The Democratic Republic of Congo suspended foreign adoptions in September and these five families are still trying to make their adoptions come true.

There have been a lot of stories about countries banning foreign adoptions, but we are so happy to see that one of them, Kyrgyzstan, has lifted that ban!

An advice column in The Guardian features a question from a birth mother who wonders if she should keep contacting her birth son whom she placed for adoption when he was a baby, even though he refuses to respond. The columnist says yes…what do you think?
