Adoption News Round-Up

Here’s a look at what’s been going on in the adoption world this week:

Absolutely in love with this story of five siblings who were all adopted into the same home. What an incredible family.

Slate ran a really powerful article about the abuse of adopted and foster children, and how some of that abuse is developed from “dangerous therapies meant to address adoptees’ attachment disorders that endorse an extreme form of tough love.” It’s horrifying to think of what these children go through, and that we may be misdiagnosing attachment disorder and assigning that to children, and putting pressure on the parents of these children, when it doesn’t really exist. This is an important article for the adoption and foster communities to be sharing with others, as this is a very serious issue that needs some awareness.

Even though same-sex adoption has been legal in the UK since 2005, half the country still believes that same-sex couples shouldn’t be allowed to adopt. While that number is up from the 8% of the population who were in support of same-sex adoption in 1983, it shows that there is still a ways to go in terms of equal opportunity adoption acceptance.

This boy’s adoption story brought an anchor woman to tears, and it will probably do the same for you as well.

This is an interesting reflection about what it is like to feel left out as an adoptive parent when your child is reuniting with their birth mother. Have you been in this situation with your child? How did it make you feel, and how did you navigate that?
