Adoption Book Summer Reading List
We love a good adoption book. Nothing digs in deeper to the adoption experience, and allows you to learn from the stories of others. The good news is, new books are coming out all the time, and today we’re doing a roundup of classics new and old that should be on everyone’s shelves.
An oldie but a goodie, The Safe Baby gives you all the information you need to create a safe and healthy home for your little one. “The Safe Baby has been the go-to guide for thousands of parents and grandparents. Chock full of essential information from an internationally recognized child safety and health expert, this comprehensive, readable, and empowering book tells you how to make your home and environment safe and healthy for your entire family. Her warm, breezy style makes it all fun! The Safe Baby won the prestigious Gold award from National Parenting Publications Awards (NAPPA) one of the country’s most authoritative consumer-awards recognizing the best in parenting resources.”
We’ve long followed the website Adoption At The Movies, which offers film reviews from a licensed social worker from the perspective of adoption and lets adoptive families know what to expect, as well as how to start important conversations around topics that come up in films. And now he’s released a book based on a year of films he watched and reviewed (not all new releases), with tips for how to help your family explore their feelings around these topics in a fun and safe way.
The teen years. No family is safe from the turmoil that erupts from this stage in your child’s life. Parenting In The Eye Of The Storm is geared toward adoptive families and “contains invaluable insights for adoptive parents and simple strategies you can use to prepare your adopted teen for the journey ahead and strengthen the family bond in the process. It provides answers, guidance and understanding – working as a road-map through the tempestuous teenage years.”
New adoptive mama Hoda Kotb wrote a beautiful children’s book, “I’ve Loved You Since Forever,” inspired by the love she has for her little girl, Haley Joy.
Written by adoption lawyers, this is a must-read for those considering adoption for their family. “Adopting in America” dives into all the ins and outs of the process and is invaluable for answering the myriad questions that come with this intricate and emotional process.
