Adoption News Round-up

Happy Thanksgiving Eve, everyone! With National Adoption Day occurring just this past Saturday, there’s been a lot of exciting adoption news stories coursing through the atmosphere. Yesterday, we posted links to some amazing mass adoption stories (up to 73 adoptions finalized at the same time!), so it’s been a really powerful week showcasing the many blessings we in the adoption world have to be thankful for.

And now, a round-up of this week’s adoption news:

In Houston, 33 children were adopted into 26 homes last weekend. This is really special for two reasons. One, that these were all foster kids who were finally able to be adopted into their respective families and two, that the ratio of children :: family shows that some families adopted more than one child at a time. There can be sadness in the foster world, as children get shuffled around from home to home, aging as they go and losing the likelihood that they will be adopted. To have 33 kids defy that stereotype in one weekend is truly awesome.

To follow up with that, there’s a great article for LGBT blogger, Rob Watson, of the Huffington Post, who offers “Foster Care Adoption: 5 Reasons Why You Don’t Want to Do It, and 5 Greater Reasons Why You Do.” He brought his two children into his family via foster care and notes that as debt he will forever owe the foster care system. We think #1 of the “Greater Reasons Why You Do” part – “Your Life Will Change Forever” – is pretty accurate. Beautifully written.
Social media strikes again. Would you pursue an adoption through Craiglist? Tracey and Dan Citron of Minnesota did…and it worked!

Here’s a post that speaks out against adoptive parents who have returned their children after they weren’t exactly what they wanted. What do you think about this? How much should adoptive parents be able to pick and choose the characteristics of the child they adopt?
