Adoption News Round-up

Happy Tuesday!

It seems like we start each of these posts in awe with how much is going on in the adoption world right now. This week is no exception. Take a look at some of the adoption world’s top news stories:

– “Stuck” is a new adoption documentary that looks at the adoption process of four children being adopted from Haiti, Ethiopia and Vietnam, showcasing challenges both the children and parents face throughout the process. What’s so wonderful about the film release is the corresponding campaign for Both Ends Burning, the organization that produced the film. They will be reaching out at every film screening for volunteers to help them promote the film, and thn entire film tour will culminate in DC with The Step Forward For Orphans March. Interested? Want to figure out how you can help? Visit their website for more volunteer information.

– Adoption Sunday TRBC – here’s an adoption story that will make you glad to be a part of this wonderful, wonderful world.

– We’ve all heard of postpartum depression, but what about post-adoption depression? It does exist, and you’re not alone if you’ve felt this after your own adoption process. The Washington Post recently ran an article about a mother who experienced depression after her adoption. Even though she had never dealt with depression in her life, suddenly she felt crippled by it. How are you supposed to deal with this when all anyone can think or say (including yourself) that you wanted this to happen so badly? This is an excellent article that uncovers a world adoptive parents shouldn’t be afraid to discuss.

– Instructions have been released by the IRS about how to file Form 8839, which is the form necessary to receive the adoption tax credit. This is very important information – make sure you read through everything, and that you and your accountant understand each clause and instruction before you file!

– Parents Magazine released an amazing list, “44 Things Every Kid Should Do Before Turning 8” showing that goals and life experiences do not have to be saved for adulthood! Including everything from “Catch and eat your own fish” and “Suffer a major disappointment and learn to live with it” to “Realize your parents are just some old kids trying to act grown up,” the list is so inspiring, and such a fun way to teach your children about the world and the many emotions and experiences it has to offer.
