Adoption News Roundup
Here’s a look at some of the adoption news being shared on the web this week:
The US Senate is taking re-homing seriously, and is working to find solutions for stopping parents from re-homing their children through illegal exchanges on the internet. Because so many instances of re-homing happen across state lines, it’s a situation that truly does require federal jurisdiction. We look forward to seeing what they develop as solutions, as this horrifying, unethical and entirely traumatic situation has to stop.
We’re so sad to see that Davion Only, the Florida teen who spoke in front of his entire church about how much he wanted a family, is now back in the foster care system. After finding a family who agreed to adopt him last year, he has since left their home after enduring an angry outburst. This only goes to show how much built-up stress and trauma can build up while a child is in foster care—even when their intentions are completely positive.
Washington joins the ranks of states who now allow adoptees access to their birth records. Before the new law you had to have been born after October 1, 1993 and your birth parents can’t have signed anything preventing access to the records. Now, birth parents can still sign documents preventing the release of the records, but adoptees born before October 1, 1993 will have access to their birth certificate.
This mama tells it like it is, and there’s one word she’d prefer you not use to describe her daughter.
Was infertility part of your journey to adoption? This adoptive mother shares her thoughts on grieving infertility…that it’s something she’s dealt with for years, and why it’s important to properly grieve before moving forward.
This is a pretty adorable story about how the smallest details can make the biggest impact in your adoption profile. Did you share anything quirky or fun that you later found out really resonated with your agency or birth mother? We’d love to hear — your successes make great tips for members of our community in the process of creating their profile now!
