Baby Wait
Those of us involved in the adoption world understand what many don’t – that just because you’ve been matched with a birth mother doesn’t guarantee you will receive that child. It is, surprisingly, a little known fact that birth mothers have the entire duration of their pregnancy, as well as time after the baby is born, to decide to keep their parental rights. In the event that a birth mother does decide to keep the child, the adoptive family has to start the adoption process all over – losing the opportunity for a child they had undoubtedly put their hopes into, while facing an even longer wait time before they will become parents.
The TV channel LOGO has developed a program specifically devoted to this concept, called “Baby Wait.” Originally, it was going to be a show about same-sex couples adopting, but they decided to broaden its point-of-view and focus specifically on that time period where adoptive parents have to wait out the potential that the birth mother may legally change her mind (a period of time that differs from state to state.)
