DIY Halloween Costumes

There’s no doubt that Halloween costume shopping can be a stressful time. You’re running all over the city putting together last minute pieces for costumes, making sure everything’s warm enough so your children don’t freeze when they’re walking around outside. And who knows how often their minds will change about what they want to be?

We decided this year that instead of going out and buying the costumes, we were going to spend a weekend making them. Not only is this a fun, family-friendly activity, but it helps to spark your child’s creativity while also encouraging them to produce something that they’ll get to wear themselves! Halloween costumes don’t need to be expensive or elaborately constructed to be a whole lot of fun — and there’s still time to create the perfect one. Sometimes though, it’s the brainstorming that’s the hardest part. So we did a little web search to come up with some great DIY Halloween costume ideas for you and your kids — easy, quick and fun!

Family Fun’s Last Minute Halloween Costumes for Kids: This site has some great witty costumes, like a “quarterback” that is an outfit with a quarter sewn to the back! Or what about being a black-eyed pea? With black peas drawn around your son/daughter’s eye? This site’s sure to give you and your kids lots of laughs.

Martha Stewart’s Homemade Kids’ Halloween Costumes: When it comes to creative and homemade, Martha Stewart’s the queen. Her site has all sorts of great ideas for family costumes, no-sew costumes, and creative tips for theatrical make-up. Whether you’re committed to making the most extravagant Halloween costume ever, or just want something quick and easy — Martha’s the way to go.

The Today show is always featuring the best and brightest of the creative world, and their DIY Halloween costumes are a real treat! All of the materials they feature are easy to procure — most likely you have them sitting around your house. They even have costumes that allow adults to get creative with their own closets — definitely a great resource.
