Sandy Relief

This is an adoption blog, yes, but as we’ve continued reading posts about families devastated by super storm Sandy, we couldn’t help but feel that our industry and world is as much about family in general as it is families brought together by adoption. Not only have homes and businesses been lost in the wake of Superstorm Sandy, but people have died and many lives will never be the same. It’s been said over and over again that they need money more than goods at this point. Relief efforts have received a deluge of items, but it is funds that are needed to truly help rebuild. If you’re interested in donating and would like to learn more about different organizations that are providing relief efforts, we’ve compiled a list for you to look over of incredible organizations dedicated to providing funds and relief to those who desperately need it. Even $1 makes a difference.

HONY & Tumblr: This is one of my favorites so far. Humans of New York is a blog shot by photographer Brandon, who left his job trading bonds to move to NYC to shoot New Yorkers. The stories he captures incredible and the photographs he’s taken of Sandy’s devastation will leave you moved, speechless and desperate to help. HONY joined with Tumblr to start a campaign to raise money for Sandy relief. They gave themselves 10 days to raise $100,000 and have raised nearly $150,000 in just 19 hours. Even if you’re not in a position to donate – bookmark the blog to keep in touch with his work. You won’t be disappointed.

Slow Food USA: This organization dedicated to supporting clean, sustainable food has compiled an amazing list of resources for places you can donate to – both food-related and otherwise. Whether you live on the East Coast or in another country they have some really wonderful options for providing exactly what Sandy victims need.

Brooklyn Community Fund: If you’ve been watching the news then you’ve heard about the Rockaways – one of Sandy’s most devastated neighborhoods, also is located in Brookyln. Donating to Brooklyn’s Community Fund will allow you to help provide resources directly to some of the sources that need it most. If you’re a New Yorker, this is also a great way to help locally.

Save the Children: This organization is ensuring that donations and relief is going directly to children’s needs in the wake of the storm. An amazing organization to support in the wake of National Adoption Month.

eBay: We’re always consuming, so why not use our own consumption for the greater good? Shop for and with different non-profits and donate money to Sandy relief at the same time!

There’s all sorts of ways to help, and we urge you to look at these options and think about how you can provide assistance to those who’ve lost everything. We’re a global community. And it’s times like these we need to remember that.
