The Uninterrupted Scholars Act
Senator Mary Landrieu (D-Louisiana) is a huge proponent of supporting orphans and children in foster care. She’s also a supporter of the film we featured in yesterday’s blog post, Stuck, and she recently helped introduce the Uninterrupted Scholars Act, (you can read the actual proposed changes here), which would allow more lenient access to educational records. For foster children this is an unprecedented leap forward, as it would grant access to educational records for individuals other than a child’s legal parent or guardian – giving mentors and supporters more opportunity to help these kids plan their academic future. This is one change promoting the rights and needs of foster students, a growing concern which will hopefully continue to see evolving progress.
Here’s a video of Senator Landrieu, explaining the act and the changes she’s hoping to empower for fostered youth.
