Time-in or Time-out?
Dr. Karyn Purvis is the Director of the Institute of Child Development at Texas Christian University, and her studies are focused on creating safe, welcoming environments for children who come from at-risk places. In this video, from Empowered to Connect, she discusses the concept of “time-in” vs. “time-out.” Namely, that in time-out, children are asked to remove themselves from a space when they have exhibited poor behavior, but in time-in, parents are encouraged to share that moment closer to their children, creating a discussion and dialogue about what they did wrong and what they can do better next time. It’s a nurturing approach to discipline that is very empowering — we’d love to know what you think, and how this jives with your own disciplining tactics.
