A home study is an assessment of a prospective adoptive family. This report is used throughout the adoption process and is required by every adoption in the United States. Before a child can be placed in an adoptive families’ home, a home study must be completed and approved.
What Is the Home Study Process?
Home studies are performed by a licensed adoption agency, home study agency, a licensed social worker or other adoption professionals. The purpose of the home study is to get a complete overview of your home, family and the type of living space you will provide for your new child. In addition, background checks and financial assessments are conducted to verify you are qualified and capable of adopting.
A home study carries significant weight in the final adoption decision. It requires you to go through a series of interviews and visits, submit various records and provide information on your family and personal background.
What Questions Are Asked in a Home Study?
In addition to background checks, references, health and income statements, home study reports compile a wealth of information. A licensed social worker or adoption professional will ask you questions related to the following areas:
- Neighborhood
- Parenting
- Daily life
- Relationships
- Employment and education
- Family background
